Welcome to Fuel Cell Knowledge
This site presents information on the research, development and adoption
of Sustainable Energy Systems based on fuel cells. The site focuses on Solid
Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs), which is the author's field of study.
The site is designed to present the growing body of knowledge on fuel cells
efficiently and coherently. Introductory material is included under the
"Fuel Cell Basics" menu (above), and there is plenty available elsewhere. The core
of the site is a selection of my own research and notes on relevant books,
papers & the web - see "Research & Analysis" menu.
There has been a tendency to consider fuel cell technologies as 'the solution' to problems with existing energy technologies, when in fact they are only one component of a sustainable energy system. This attitude has led to two problems: the marketing of fuel cells for applications for which they are not the most sustainable solution; and the public misunderstanding of the need for sustainable hydrogen (energy) production in order to realise the potential of fuel cells. To this end, the "Related Technogies" and "Commercialisation" menus aim to place fuel cells in a wider context.
Fuel Cell technology has a history of being over-hyped and then abandoned due to unrealistic expectations. With this in mind, I have avoided (or at least flagged) unrealistic schemes and have taken great pains to reference as much as possible.
