Ocean-Bed-Sediment Fuel Cells
A new scheme, the large scale feasibilty of which has yet to be demonstrated.
Information from Fuel Cell Connection October 2001, more may follow.
DARPA and Navy Developing Fuel Cell to Run on Ocean Sediment
The Office of Naval Research and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
(DARPA) are working on an oceanic fuel cell called OSCAR (Ocean Sediment Carbon
Aerobic Reactor). Organic matter in the ocean sediment serves as the fuel
which is reacted with oxygen in the sea
water by electrodes, "allowing electrons to flow in the same manner as
a conventional fuel cell".
